I met with Mick for the last time today to discuss the progress of my project and how to complete it, including the presentation and exhibition ideas.
Inspiration Section
This section needs finishing as there are a few blank spaces still, this segment is too visual and I need some theories and quotes to bring into the project as it draws to a close. I want to read more into photography and memory and pull some interesting quotes to inform my practice and research.
Presentation
This was the main point of discussion as I was unsure about the direction of where to take the presentation and how to showcase my work and project in a relevant and creative way.
I first thought I wanted to use a more intimate space because of the themes and topics of discussion, with it being my personal memories I didn't want them to get lost in a large room.
Mick told me to think about my themes and how I want my photos to translate to others, why do I want people to look at these photos in particular? Why is it my memories that are in this exhibition?
How am I going to frame the images to get an audience response?
- I want the audience to ask questions of memory and why we capture them
- Perhaps put their own memories onto mine as they were in similar settings or a similar time period.
We spoke about the idea of pairing text with my images, something that I had previously thought about, to state why I kept the image and perhaps what was happening outside of the frame? I do like this idea but I don't want to spoon feed my viewers with information so they can draw their own conclusions and ask questions themselves.
We discussed photographic memory display and how young people, in particular students display their photos and memories in collages on walls. This is a universal experience and practice seen in many peoples bedrooms and communal areas, creating a shared memory space. These photos often include ones similar to those that I've taken, often without aesthetic in mind just to capture the true reality of that moment.
To piggy back of this last idea we also spoke about images as a set and why they work together. Using collage to combine a few images into one to perhaps give the photo more context than being on its own. This raises questions of where one photograph ends and another begins, blending them into one cohesive image.
Plan
As the meeting ended I made plans to find more academic influences for my work. I also want to investigate the collage and why it is such a common practice, patching together ones of my own in Photoshop that mirror what would be seen on a wall in the exhibition space.
Photographs are memory objects:
- why do we keep them?
- how do you construct the images?
